I know, last theme lasted only two doodles, but I just really wanted to start drawing the soldiers. Anyway, today’s the Greek hoplite. The hoplites, named after their shield (hopla, in Greek), were the middle-class soldiers in the city-states in ancient Greek. They had to buy their own gear, which included a shield, spear, helmet and sometimes armor.

And today I sketched the chlamys – an ancient Greek piece of garment, which is basically a square piece of sheet worn over the shoulders. It is tied over the right shoulder using a fibula (ancient brooch). The chlamys is usually worn by soldiers or messengers.

This is the second establishment of the DDP. In this one I’ll sketch all kinds of clothes worn in ancient times, especially Greece and Rome, which are the subjects of half of my academic degree. This one is a Doric chiton, worn in ancient Greece. It’s a square piece of cloth worn around the body and clasped over the shoulders.

This one lacks detail, but I hope it makes for it in feel.

Today was fine but tiring. I really enjoy ancient Greek literature class, which I have on Tuesdays these semester. We read the Iliad, and it’s a pleasure listening to the lecturer read it and explain what’s going on there and how the artistic elements bring the story and the characters out.
I like a mysterious place, lit only here and there and remain mostly dark, revealing just a little of what’s going on around, yet enough to convey the feeling of the place.

This is the second doodle. still in the “pathy” theme. I like it when paths are obscured or contained within an interesting frame. It gives them so much more magic and mystery. Next ones will probably even be more oblique.

Study and work take up all the time I have, which leaves little time for drawing. I spend a lot of time on writing papers for philosophy class (we’re reading David Hume!), reading and practicing my Latin. So I want to stop neglecting my blog and try to force myself into writing here and posting more art. This is why I want to start the Daily Doodle Project, which will also be known as DDP (an abbreviation suspiciously resembling a name for a toxic fertilizer).
These daily doodles will also have a theme! I will create several sketches along this theme, for as long as I wish, and then move on to the next theme. I hope to post daily, so subscribe to receive updates.
First theme is “Paths”, also known as roads.
